Education:Science Projects: Spin Your Eggs
Here is another
egg-speriment: find the one hard-boiled egg. Show your friends how smart
you are by using science.
What you need
You will need four raw eggs and one hard-boiled egg.
What you do
- Ask your friends if they can find the one raw egg amongst all the hard-boiled eggs.
- Put the eggs on the table and spin them.
- Stop the egg from spinning by lightly touching the egg.
- The hard-boiled egg stops quickly, the raw egg keeps on going.
Why it happens
The liquid inside the raw egg continues to move. That keeps the egg spinning longer.
How long does it take a bird to make an egg?
That depends on three factors: the species of the bird, its age, and its health. Time intervals between eggs laid in a clutch:
- 24 hours: many ducks, woodpeckers, and some geese.
- 28 to 48 hours: ostriches, rheas, swans, herons, storks, cranes, doves, owls, and hummingbirds.
- 3 days: emus, cassowaries, and penguins.
- 5 days: condors and kiwis.
- 5 to 7 days: boobies and some hornbills
Are all eggs white?
Why do you think some eggs are different colors?
Do mammals lay eggs?
Two kinds of mammals lay eggs: the echidna and the duck-billed platypus.
What is the laziest bird, according to Dr. Zoolittle?
Instead of building their own nests, female European cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds' nests. They hope this will trick the other birds into raising the cuckoo babies.
Do eggs talk?
A few days before they hatch, many birds start peeping and clacking their bills or beaks.
Catch Dr. Zoolittle in an entertaining show in the San Diego Zoo's Children's Zoo daily during the summer and every weekend and school holiday.
